What is Play Therapy? •
At Piece by Piece Play Therapy, we believe that play is the language of children. Our approach is centred around creating a safe and nurturing environment where children can play freely and express themselves.
Through the power of play and connection, we help children grow and thrive. Each therapy session provides the opportunity for the child to safely share their needs, wants, and wishes while developing alternative coping skills and strategies.
Child Centred Play Therapy is an evidenced based developmentally sensitive mental health approach for children. The use of play enables children to communicate and engage more effectively than traditional talk-based therapies as it is more aligned with children’s cognitive development.
It also allows expression through non-verbal outlets that children may not have the words to convey. Play is not only essential for promoting childhood development but has many therapeutic powers to bring positive change.

The approach is a way of being with children rather than a way of doing something to or for the child. By creating a therapeutic relationship, the child has the potential to positively self-direct at their own pace, allowing an increase in self-esteem, self-actualisation, and resilience. A play therapist can gain insights into areas that a child may need assistance in and help the child learn new coping mechanisms to improve daily functioning.
What are the benefits?
-
Play Therapy provides a natural outlet for children to express and communicate their emotions, even when they may struggle to articulate them verbally. It allows them to release feelings of anxiety, anger, sadness, or confusion in a safe and constructive manner.
-
Through Play Therapy, children gain a better understanding of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. They develop self-awareness and insight into their experiences, enabling them to navigate challenges, resolve conflicts, and develop healthier coping strategies.
-
Play Therapy supports children in developing emotional regulation skills. They learn to identify and manage their emotions, leading to increased resilience and the ability to handle life's ups and downs more effectively.
-
Engaging in Play Therapy encourages children to use their imagination, creativity, and problem-solving skills. They learn to make choices, negotiate, and find solutions, fostering their cognitive and social development.
-
Play Therapy promotes a sense of empowerment and builds self-esteem. As children engage in sessions and experience the therapist's full acceptance, understanding and support, they develop a positive self-image and a stronger sense of their own abilities.
-
Through the therapeutic relationship with our trained Play Therapists, children learn to trust, connect, and develop healthier relationships. This experience can positively impact their interactions with peers, family members, and other significant individuals in their lives.
